Most solar systems generate more than the property uses in the middle of the day. Without storage, that surplus goes back to the grid for a feed-in rate that is usually well below what you pay to buy power. A battery captures that surplus instead.
Using stored energy later
Stored solar is typically used across the evening peak — cooking, lighting, air conditioning, hot water — and overnight. That raises your solar self-consumption and reduces how much electricity you buy from the grid, though how much depends entirely on your usage pattern and system design.
Adding a battery to existing solar
You don't need to start again. Many existing solar installations can have storage added, either with a hybrid inverter replacement or an AC-coupled battery alongside the current setup. We assess the existing system, inverter and switchboard first and tell you honestly what's involved.
Battery sizing
Capacity is matched to your evening and overnight consumption, your solar generation and what you want the battery to cover. Capacities we commonly discuss include:

Backup capability
A standard grid-connected solar system shuts down in an outage for safety reasons. A battery system configured with backup can keep selected circuits running instead. Not every battery or installation includes this — if outage resilience matters to you, say so early, because it changes the design and the switchboard work.
